What Is Liposuction?
Also known as lipoplasty or body contouring surgery, liposuction is a cosmetic procedure designed to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, chin, and neck. The procedure involves the insertion of a thin tube called a cannula through small incisions in the skin. The cannula is then used to suction out unwanted fat deposits, resulting in a more sculpted and contoured appearance.
Liposuction has become a widely sought-after cosmetic procedure for individuals looking to sculpt and contour their bodies by removing stubborn fat deposits. While not a substitute for weight loss or a healthy lifestyle, liposuction can provide significant improvements in body shape and proportion.
Liposuction Can Correct:
Face and Neck
Excess fat in the face and neck can blur the natural contours of your face. Liposuction may be performed on the jowls and neck to remove bothersome fat deposits, revealing a sleek and sculpted jawline.
Abdomen Area
Localized fat in the abdomen may damage your self-confidence. Liposuction can target various parts of the abdomen including the waist, stomach, and hips. By trimming away stubborn fat from your midsection, you can obtain a slimmer and smoother waistline.
Lower Body
Unwanted fat in the lower body can create overall disproportion and make it difficult to find clothes that fit properly. Liposuction can treat undesirable fat in your knees, buttocks, inner thighs, and outer thighs. With liposuction, you can achieve the pleasing, balanced silhouette you desire.

Who Is a Candidate for Liposuction?
Dr. Careaga, Dr. Durand, and Dr. William offer expert liposuction at their state-of-the-art Careaga Plastic Surgery located in the heart of Miami, Florida. At your personal consultation, Dr. Careaga or Dr. Durand will help you determine if you are a candidate for liposuction and how extensive of a procedure will bring you the best results.
Tumescent Liposuction
Tumescent liposuction is a traditional liposuction technique that involves injecting a solution of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine into the treatment area to numb the area, constrict blood vessels, and facilitate fat removal. Once the solution has taken effect, our surgeon inserts the cannula and suctions out the excess fat deposits. Adding fluid to the area creates space between the fatty tissue and muscle, allowing for additional precision.
Before, During, After Liposuction
Candidacy for Liposuction
Candidates for liposuction are typically individuals who:
- Have localized areas of excess fat that are resistant to diet and exercise
- Are at or near their ideal body weight
- Have good skin elasticity
- Are in good overall health
- Have realistic expectations about the results of the procedure
Preparing for Liposuction
Before undergoing liposuction, you will have a consultation with Dr. Careaga or Dr. Durand to discuss your concerns, goals, medical history, and any concerns or questions you have about the procedure. During this consultation, our surgeon will perform a physical examination and assess your candidacy for liposuction.
In preparation for the procedure, you will likely be advised to:
- Maintain a stable weight
- Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption
- Discontinue certain medications or supplements that may increase the risk of bleeding
- Arrange for transportation to and from the surgical facility on the day of the procedure
- Follow any specific pre-operative instructions provided by your surgeon
During the Liposuction Procedure
The liposuction procedure typically takes place in an outpatient surgical facility under either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the treatment, your preferences, and the recommendation of your surgeon. The steps of the procedure may vary depending on the technique used and the areas being treated, but generally include:
- Making incisions: Small incisions are made in the skin near the treatment area to allow for cannula insertion.
- Inserting the cannula: A thin tube called a cannula is inserted through the incisions and used to suction out excess fat deposits.
- Sculpting and contouring: Our surgeon uses the cannula to sculpt and contour the treatment area to achieve your desired results.
- Closing the incisions: Once the desired amount of fat has been removed, the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape.
Recovery and Aftercare Following Liposuction
After liposuction, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated areas. This is normal and typically resolves within a few weeks. To aid in the recovery process and minimize discomfort, you may be advised to:
- Wear compression garments: Compression garments help reduce swelling and support the treated areas as they heal.
- Take prescribed medications: Pain medications and antibiotics may be prescribed to manage discomfort and reduce the risk of infection.
- Limit physical activity: You will be advised to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and exercise for several weeks after liposuction to allow the body to heal properly.
- Attend follow-up appointments: You will have follow-up appointments with Dr. Careaga or Dr. Durand to monitor your progress, remove any sutures or dressings, and ensure you are healing properly.
Combining Liposuction With Other Procedures
In addition to liposuction, various procedures are options to include in a patient’s procedure plan to achieve their desired results. The two most common body contouring procedures to combine with liposuction are listed below. Your personal preferences and goals, as well as your surgeon’s recommendations, will determine which methods are recommended to achieve your desired outcome.
Liposuction and Emsculpt®
Emsculpt® utilizes electromagnetic energy to tighten and lift muscles in the abdomen and buttocks. The energy causes the muscles to contract supra-maximally (at a greater strength than is possible with traditional exercises). When combined with liposuction, Emsculpt® can help patients achieve better muscle definition and more sculpted body contours.
Liposuction and Tummy Tuck
Liposuction is often done along with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). Tummy tuck surgery is designed to redefine the abdominal region and remove excess skin around the torso. Abdominoplasty is especially useful for patients with loose, hanging skin around their midsection. After gently removing fat from the stomach using liposuction, the stomach muscles are tightened and firmed to the desired contour. The skin is pulled taut, and any excess is removed to provide a smoother, tighter abdomen. Liposuction alone removes excess fat from the target areas but cannot address loose skin in the way that a tummy tuck can.
Liposuction and Renuvion® J-Plasma®
When patients look for both fat reduction and skin tightening, Renuvion® combined with liposuction surgery can be a good option.
For qualified candidates, adding Renuvion® J-Plasma® to a liposuction procedure may be able to replace the need for more extensive plastic surgery procedures (such as tummy tuck surgery, arm lift surgery, or thigh lift surgery). Ideal candidates are primarily looking to eliminate excess skin and fat.
Patients whose concerns extend beyond sagging skin and excess fat may need more extensive surgical procedures. These may include separated muscles or excessive amounts of sagging skin.
Renuvion® J-Plasma® utilizes a combination of radio frequency with helium plasma to tighten skin and reduce fine lines through tiny incisions on the neck and body. This minimally invasive approach is an excellent alternative to laser techniques that use heat, as the cold plasma used for Renuvion® J-Plasma® treatment minimizes tissue damage and promotes cellular regeneration, allowing for better results and an easier recovery.
Concerns
How Much Does Liposuction Cost?
The cost of liposuction can vary widely depending on several factors, including the extent of the treatment, the areas being treated, the surgeon’s experience and expertise, the geographic location of the surgical facility, and any additional fees for anesthesia, facility fees, and post-operative care. You will receive a detailed cost estimate after your consultation with Dr. Careaga or Dr. Durand as well as information about our financing options if needed.
Which Liposuction Option Costs More?
The cost of liposuction can vary depending on the specific technique used and the surgeon’s fee structure. Generally, techniques that involve advanced technology or specialized equipment, may be more expensive than traditional tumescent liposuction. Additionally, the cost of liposuction may be higher for larger treatment areas or multiple treatment areas, as this requires more time and resources to perform.

Liposuction FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
-
It’s important to note that liposuction is not intended as a weight loss procedure or a solution for obesity. Instead, it is best suited for individuals who are at or near their ideal body weight but have localized areas of stubborn fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Ideal candidates for liposuction are individuals who are in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and are committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle following the procedure.
-
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure. The length of the procedure depends on the size and location of the treatment area as well as the amount of fat being removed. Dr. Careaga, Dr. Durand or Dr. William can provide you with an accurate estimate of the anticipated length of the procedure during your liposuction consultation.
-
Although most patients lose a couple of pounds during fat removal, their overall weight does not change significantly after surgery. Liposuction is not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle; it is only meant to remove stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. Liposuction is a body contouring surgery and should not be viewed as a weight loss procedure.
-
Liposuction recovery is generally well-tolerated and less intense than more invasive procedures, like a tummy tuck surgery. However, you should expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort after liposuction, the level of which depends on the extent of the procedure. Discomfort after liposuction can be minimized with over-the-counter pain medication, if necessary.
-
The length of your recovery depends on the extent of the treatment, the volume of fat removed, and the patient’s response to the procedure. Some patients experience temporary swelling and bruising, but most can return to work a few days after surgery. You will need to wear a compression garment according to your surgeon’s post-op instructions. Strenuous work and activities must be avoided for up to six weeks after surgery.
-
Because liposuction incisions are quite small, the resulting scars are minimal and usually go unnoticed. Most scars also tend to fade significantly over time.
-
The cost of liposuction varies depending on the techniques used, anesthesia fees, and areas chosen. Dr. Careaga, Dr. Durand or Dr. William will provide you with an accurate cost estimate during your liposuction consultation.
-
On its own, traditional liposuction does not remove or tighten loose skin. For patients with minor to moderate skin laxity, combining liposuction with Renuvion® ’s J-Plasma® can provide significant skin tightening results without the need for excision surgery. Renuvion® ’s J-Plasma® can be applied nearly anywhere on the body to tighten loose skin, including the neck, abdomen, thighs, hips, and buttocks. This technology combines helium plasma with radio frequency energy to promote cellular rejuvenation.
Patients with significant skin laxity (or hanging skin) are better suited for a skin excision surgery like tummy tuck or body lift surgery.
-
As with any surgery, the risks of liposuction include:
- Anesthesia reaction
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Infection
-
The fat cells removed during liposuction do not grow back, but moderate to significant weight gain will change your overall shape. It is recommended to lead a healthy lifestyle to maintain your liposuction results.
