Achieve a Younger-Looking Neck

Posted January 31, 2019 in Aging Neck

Vertical banding on the neck, a double chin, and jowls are some of the most tell-tale signs of visible aging. While most individuals are diligent in protecting the skin above the jawline, the neck is often forgotten. The neck acts like a pedestal for the face, and an aging neck can affect the canvas above. Dr. Careaga offers both non-surgical and surgical procedures to address the aging of the neck and restore a youthful and balanced facial appearance.

What Leads to an Aging Neck?

The skin on the neck is thin, which puts it at risk for premature aging. Combine that with the fact that the skin on the neck stretches with each turn of the head and the fact that sunscreen is rarely applied, and you are soon left with an aged neck appearance. The constant movement and trauma to the skin on the neck increase the rate in which collagen breaks down, and this results with loose skin in the form of vertical banding and jowls. In addition, excess weight in the submental area leads to a double chin or “turkey wattle.” All of these contribute to a neck appearance that looks older than you are.

Your Surgical Options

Facelift and neck lift surgery are performed to restore youthfulness to an aging neck. These procedures, which are usually combined, sculpt the neck region by tightening the underlying muscles and removing excess, loose and lax skin. By tightening these, your neck contour immediately becomes more defined. Candidates for neck lift surgery often experience moderate to severe aging on the neck that cannot be remedied through non-surgical means. For patients who present a double chin, whether it is genetic or the result of weight gain, unwanted submental fat is surgically removed through liposuction. This can be performed alone or in combination with a facelift or neck lift to slim the contour of the neck.

Renuvion/J-Plasma® offers minimally invasive skin tightening on the neck through the use of helium plasma and radiofrequency energy. This treatment targets loose and sun-damaged skin by making tiny incisions in which the Renuvion/J-Plasma® handpiece is inserted. Plasma energy is released from the handpiece to tighten the underlying tissues and skin. Renuvion/J-Plasma® is performed under anesthesia to ensure comfort.

Your Non-surgical Options

For patients experiencing a double chin, non-surgical procedures may be enough to remedy dissatisfaction. Double chins can be treated through the use of KYBELLA®, an injectable treatment that breaks down submental fat stores, or through SculpSure®, a light-based body contouring system that targets the submental area to reduce unwanted fat cells. Both of these treatments are non-surgical and do not require incisions or extensive downtime. Results start to show immediately after treatment and continue to improve over the following weeks and months.

Medspa treatments, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), microneedling, and HydraFacial®, are designed to treat hyperpigmentation, congested pores, and fine lines and wrinkles. These treatments help to prevent future wrinkles and saggy skin and lead to a younger-looking neck.
