Differentiating Your Wrinkles: Static Versus Dynamic

Posted October 18, 2019 in Injectable Fillers

Many men and women only see wrinkles as lines on their faces that they would love to get rid of. Most individuals do not know that wrinkles have a type, and when it comes to the face, there are two types: static and dynamic.

What Are Static Lines?

Static lines are what most people think of when hearing the word wrinkle.

These lines are the result of sun damage and natural aging, such as the breakdown of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. When the production of these proteins diminishes, the tissues lose their strength and become lax, creating creases that are present even when the face is at rest.

Static lines start small and unnoticeable; however, they deepen over the years and become permanently etched in your skin. Cosmetic treatment is the only way to reduce or eliminate the appearance of static lines significantly.

Additional causes of static lines include smoking, genetics, harsh environments, and poor nutrition.

What Are Dynamic Lines?

Dynamic lines are otherwise known as expression lines.

These wrinkles develop in response to repeated muscle movements like smiling, frowning, blinking, and squinting.

Every time the muscle contracts during one of these activities, the skin bunches together and creates temporary folds.

Common wrinkles like crow’s feet, frown lines between the eyebrows, and forehead lines are dynamic lines because they develop when the muscles are tensed.

Can Dynamic Lines Become Static Lines?

Dynamic lines form when the face is in motion regardless of age. Even a child will show lines between their eyebrows when they frown or make specific facial expressions.

Initially, dynamic lines are not worrisome because they disappear as soon as the face is no longer tensed or showing that specific emotion.

Unfortunately, the more often the muscles contract in a specific way, the more likely it is that dynamic wrinkles will turn into static wrinkles.

Since static lines develop from the breakdown of tissue, and even muscle contraction weakens this tissue, it is inevitable that temporary lines will soon become permanent.

What Are Your Treatment Options?

Both static and dynamic lines can be addressed with an injectable treatment; however, they each benefit from a specific type.

Since static lines develop from a loss of tissue, they need an injectable treatment that will restore volume. This is done with dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and REVANESSE® VERSA™. These hyaluronic acid fillers provide instant volume by attracting moisture to the area for volume and plumpness. This allows the wrinkles to be reduced, or even eliminated temporarily.

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers promote hydration and leave your complexion looking naturally fuller even when the face is at rest.

Since dynamic lines form in response to muscle contractions, they require a treatment that interferes with this movement. Neuromodulators like BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® block the chemical signals to the muscles so that they are unable to contract. The immobilization of the muscles stops dynamic lines from forming.
