How Long Does Rhinoplasty Take to Heal?

Are you unhappy with your nose? Is it too big, or is it bulbous or crooked? If any of these concerns sound familiar, you’re not alone. In 2023, nearly 50,000 people underwent rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery, to improve the appearance of their nose. However, before committing to surgery, many people wonder how long it takes to heal after rhinoplasty. In this blog, we provide a rhinoplasty recovery timeline and educate you about factors that may affect how long it takes to heal after rhinoplasty surgery.

4 Min Read:

Week One of Rhinoplasty Recovery

As with most surgeries, you will experience the most discomfort and other side effects the first week after your rhinoplasty procedure. You will wear an external nasal splint and possibly an internal splint, depending on the extent of your surgery. You will have significant swelling and bruising and will likely feel some discomfort or mild pain. You may also have a sensation of pressure, and feel congested. It is important to sleep on your back with your head elevated to help minimize swelling, and keep your activities to a minimum.

At the end of the first week, you will come in for a follow-up visit to remove your splints and may be cleared to return to work.

Week Two of Rhinoplasty Recovery

During week two, you will see a reduction in swelling, and a significant amount of bruising will have faded. However, keep in mind that it takes time for all of the swelling to subside, so your nose will still look more prominent than usual. Your nose may still feel tender or sensitive, so while it is ok to return to light activities, continue to take it easy.

Weeks Three and Four of Rhinoplasty Recovery

You will feel significantly better when you reach the end of the first month of your rhinoplasty recovery. Breathing through your nose will be much easier, though you may still feel slightly congested. While most of the swelling has dissipated by now, you will still notice some puffiness, especially in the tip of your nose, for up to six months after your surgery. You can return to light exercise but continue to avoid strenuous activities and anything that could result in an impact to your face.

Months Two to Six of Rhinoplasty Recovery

When you reach months two and three after your rhinoplasty, your nose will look much better, though some residual swelling remains. During months four through six, your nose will settle further into its final shape, with only subtle changes from here on out.

Around the two or three-month mark, you will be able to return to all of your daily activities as your nose has healed enough to withstand normal activities. By the time you reach the four to six-month mark, you can return to all activities, including high-impact and contact sports.

One Year After Rhinoplasty Surgery

You made it! At this point, your nose has settled into its gorgeous final shape, and all swelling has dissipated, leaving you with the stunning results you desired.

Factors That Affect Rhinoplasty Healing Time

Just like no two noses are alike, no two rhinoplasty recoveries are the same. Some of the factors that may affect how quickly you heal from your rhinoplasty include:

Type of Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty typically takes longer to heal than closed rhinoplasty, primarily because it is a more extensive surgery. The external incision will extend your recovery time, and an open rhinoplasty usually results in more significant swelling than a closed rhinoplasty.

Extent of Surgery

Your healing time is also influenced by how extensive your rhinoplasty surgery is. Significant reshaping, structural changes, or cartilage grafting are all things that may add time to your recovery.

Individual Healing

Everyone heals differently and at different rates, so if it takes you a bit more time to see a reduction in swelling or your nose feels sensitive longer than you thought it would, it may just be your body’s healing process. Your age and overall health also influence the rate at which you heal. However, if you experience significant pain or swelling, contact your surgeon to ensure everything is progressing as it should be.

Post-Operative Care

It is essential that you follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions after rhinoplasty to both ensure a gorgeous result and encourage the healing process. Keeping your head elevated as much as possible, applying ice or cold compresses, and avoiding strenuous activities will help your recovery progress smoothly.
