Each year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) releases a statistics report on the plastic surgery procedures performed in the previous year, including the most popular treatments and changing aesthetic trends. The most recently released report found that the majority of aesthetic procedures are now focusing on creating a balanced, fit-looking physique, including a more naturally athletic shape. 

This blog discusses the three most popular plastic surgery procedures performed in 2023, according to the ASPS report, and why these consistently land in the top five most requested plastic surgeries. 

What Is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is an organization that has been around for nearly 93 years. The society has more than 8,000 board-certified surgeons in its membership, representing 92% of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Their mission is to advocate for quality care and safety for plastic surgery patients by offering education and practice support to plastic surgeons. Members of ASPS must be:

• Surgeons who are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) or by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
• Surgeons who have graduated from an accredited medical school and completed a minimum of six years of surgical training, as well as at least three years of plastic surgery residency
• Surgeons who engage in continuing education in both medical and safety practices
• Surgeons who perform plastic surgery in fully accredited surgical facilities, Medicare-certified facilities, or state-licensed facilities.

The Most Popular Plastic Surgery Procedures of 2023

Liposuction

Liposuction is the number one cosmetic surgery procedure requested in 2023, and it has remained in the top spot for the past three years. Over 347,000 liposuction procedures were performed in 2023, jumping from 265,000 in 2019 and increasing 7% from 2022. 

Liposuction is the perfect procedure for eliminating excess fat nearly anywhere on your body, from chin to ankles. Liposuction allows patients to put the finishing touches on their bodies, sculpting and contouring places where fat refuses to budge. The stomach, waist, and hips are typically the areas most often targeted with liposuction to give patients the definition and curves they seek.  

Breast Augmentation 

Breast augmentation has remained in the top five cosmetic surgery procedures since 2006, often landing in the number one spot. In 2023, it claimed the number two spot, with more than 304,000 procedures performed, up from 287,000 in 2019 and increasing 2% since 2022. 

Breast augmentation is popular for several reasons, including its versatility. Rounding out the top three most requested plastic surgery procedures of 2023 is abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery. In 2023, over 170,000 patients underwent a tummy tuck, up from 118,000 in 2019 and increasing 5% over 2022.
