What Should I Eat to Look Younger?

Posted June 02, 2021 in Skin Care, Skin Health

3 Minute Read:

While aging is a natural and inevitable part of life, the foods you eat can make all the difference in helping you age better.

With the right diet, you can help turn back the hands of time and keep the doctor away. Here are some of the easy-to-find foods that will keep you looking and feeling your best.

Healthy Foods for Healthy Skin

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables, or “eating the rainbow,” as some nutritionists prefer to call it, is a great way to fill your body with antioxidants that protect skin cells and introduce nutrients that nourish skin cells.

The wider the array of colors you eat, the more nutrients and health benefits you can receive.

Most colorful fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, oranges, blueberries, pomegranate, avocado, bananas, broccoli, and spinach, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that boost your skin’s protection mechanism against oxidative stress and inflammatory challenges.

Specifically, carotenoids, which are found in leafy greens and yellow foods like oranges and carrots, and lycopene (the red pigment in berries and tomatoes) help protect the skin against harmful UV rays and environmental irritants that cause premature aging.

Fish

Even if you are not a seafood lover, it might be time to reconsider. Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to reduce inflammation. Additionally, when combined with Vitamin E and C, omega-3 fatty acids promote collagen synthesis.

And more collagen means healthier, tighter skin.

Eggs

Eggs contain protein and essential amino acids that are necessary for maintaining and repairing our skin. Being rich in Vitamin E, A, and antioxidants, eggs can protect against the free radicals responsible for cellular damage and boost the skin’s elasticity.

Legumes

Many of the foods that fall under this category, such as beans, chickpeas, lentils, etc., are high in nutrients essential for skin health.

What Should You Avoid?

Being mindful of what you eat clearly impacts the health and age of your skin.

Sugar should be avoided (or at least limited) as it causes insulin spikes and inflammation, which is one of the driving forces of aging in your body. Inflammatory foods break down collagen, affecting your skin’s internal make-up and even causing acne.

Dairy and simple carbohydrates are other known food allergens that promote inflammation.

What Else Should I Do to Protect My Skin?

To further enhance your overall skin health, make it a habit to maintain good at-home and in-office skin care practices.

There are so many benefits that come with adding professional skin care and massage treatments to your skincare routine, including but not limited to preventing potential skin issues, fighting the aging process, and thoroughly cleansing pores.

The pampering indulgence of a regular facial can also do wonders for your frame of mind.

Some of the most popular in-office skin care treatments include:

  • HydraFacial®
  • Chemical peels
  • Oxygen facials
  • Microneedling
  • DermaPeel™
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
  • CryoCorrect
  • Dermaplaning
  • Massage therapies
